Elder Tom
and Sister Bonnie Armstrong
served as the first missionaries called from Salt
Lake at Camp Alpine. We served from March 2011 to Sep 2012. Caretakers lived at the camp before that time.
We loved
walking through the camp and sitting outside of Helaman Hall just observing all
the beauty around. We loved the rain and
the greenery. Being from California where you really had to work hard to get
things to grow, they grew so easily there.
The worst
experience for Elder Armstrong was when bees invaded the water heater closet at
Helaman Hall. They nested inside the wall behind the water heaters and the
opening was a small hole up high on the wall. He was crawling across the tops of
the water heaters with the intent of spraying poison through the hole, when a
bee flew out of the hole and made a “beeline” straight for the tip of his nose … "very painful”.
One of the
sweetest experiences is when the Young Women came up to our home and would sing
to us at night. We love being invited to the activities with the young Women
and their leaders.
Twice we
were stuck in camp. One time was when we were flooded because there was so much
rain and the culvert under the road gave way and of course the road was washed
away. After a few days the brethren over the camp came and put boards across
the destroyed road so we could get out. It took several weeks to get it
repaired.
Another time
it snowed so much that the trees and branches fell across the road and we had
to cut our way out. The snow was so
beautiful.
We loved
being at Camp Alpine and feel it is a very special place.
There is so
much to tell about our experiences there and our love for the place and the
people there who served through all the camp projects and girls camps.
